What is Newmarket Energy Efficiency Retrofit (NEER) Program?
The Newmarket Energy Efficiency Retrofit (NEER) business plan is a municipal initiative designed for Newmarket residents to retrofit their homes and save on utility costs all while lowering the community's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As of 2017, there are over 29,000 homes in the Town of Newmarket with the residential sector consuming approximately 4.3M gigajoules (GJ) of energy. This contributed to 126,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cost residents $74M that year alone.
Trends predict that as current power generating infrastructure becomes more outdated and demand for energy increases, Newmarket can see a rise in energy cost between $139M to as high as $238M by 2042.
