Protect our mature trees

We attended the Climate Change workshop put on by York Region this week and were pleased that Climate Change is on the minds of town council. However, the focus was on how to deal with Climate Change and not on how we can do our part to slow it down or even better, stop it.

Many of us residents of Newmarket/Aurora and also East Gwillimbury, expressed alarm at the number of old-growth and mature trees that are being razed by developers in a clear-cut fashion when doing new construction/developments.

This has got to stop! Trees are needed to ensure land stability, provide canopy and most of all to provide oxygen and absorb carbon. We depend on trees for the air we breathe, for our lives!

While I support initiatives to plant more trees, this does not relieve us of our ability TO PROTECT OLD-GROWTH and MATURE TREES!

What is Newmarket/Aurora doing to implement an inclusive trees by-law that would restrict the ability of homeowners and developers from removing our precious trees?

A trip along Davis Drive toward Bathurst and south down Bathurst Street is enough to make you weep! Similarly, north of Green Lane on Yonge shows the same wanton disregard for our forests and trees.

Please stop this devastation of our natural forests and in particular our old-growth and mature trees.

Please let me know what the plan is to protect our trees. It is ironic that when builders post sites for their development, they usually show a beautiful background of nature at its finest, then proceed to devastate that very natural environment.
