FAQs
- Adequate sight distance for both drivers and pedestrians, in accordance with the Geometric Design Guide by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)
- Paved road width of 15 metres or less
- A minimum distance of 100 metres from any railway crossing
Q1: What happens to the existing School Crossing Guard at Gorham Street and Muriel Street?
The School Crossing Guard will continue to supervise the crossing as usual when school is in session. The new PXO provides an added layer of protection for students and other pedestrians.
Q2: How does the Town determine where to install a Pedestrian Crossover (PXO)?
It is determined by the Town’s Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) Policy, which is based on the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM Book 15).
The Town evaluates potential locations based on pedestrian and traffic volumes, existing traffic control devices (such as all-way stops or traffic signals) within 200 m, and pedestrian system connectivity. In terms of pedestrian activity, the total pedestrian volume must be at least 100 with adjustments are considered based on request location.
Additionally, the proposed location must meet the following technical conditions:
Only locations that satisfy all of these criteria are considered for PXO installation.
Please note: The Town is currently implementing this PXO as part of a pilot project to evaluate how PXOs perform in the local context. At this time, no additional PXO locations are planned until the results of the pilot have been assessed.
Q3: How does the Town select the type of PXO to install?
Once a proposed location meets the criteria for a new PXO (see Q2), the type of PXO is selected in accordance with the Town’s Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) Policy, which is based on the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM Book 15).
The selection is guided by the Pedestrian Crossover Selection Matrix, which is available below. This matrix determines the appropriate PXO type based on traffic volume and road width, ensuring that the design matches the operating conditions at the site.
Types of PXOs
Type B PXO - Type B Pedestrian Crossovers include side-mounted and overhead-mounted signs, pavement markings, and flashing beacons with push buttons.
Type C PXO - Type C Crossovers feature side-mounted signs, pavement markings, and flashing beacons with push buttons, but without overhead signs.
Type D PXO - Type D Crossovers use side-mounted signs and pavement markings only, with no flashing beacons. |
