Give us your ideas for future Safety Starts with You videos
almost 6 years agoThe Town recently launched its new “Safety Starts with You” video series. Our first three videos focus on cycling safety. The video above highlights the importance of wearing a helmet. We want your input on which area of road/traffic safety we should focus on for our next series in 2019 (i.e. distracted driving, pedestrian safety, speeding or others!) Share your road/traffic safety ideas here!
Thank you for your input!
Todd Kyleover 5 years agoCycling rules information for both motorists and cyclists
There is a need for education for both motorists and cyclists on how to properly share the road so as to protect vulnerable road users. As a guide, the town of Grimsby has an excellent two-sided handout on this. A video could be produced from this content, highlighting, for example, that cyclists are allowed on the road and not on sidewalks; that cyclists ride on the right but may take the full lane when safest; that a one-metre passing distance around cyclists is mandatory.
1Anthonyover 5 years agoThis version is audience appropriate if the target market is for youth.. any thoughts about an teenage / adult / seniors market segment?

I reside near a busy intersection, and I am forever seeing adults and children alike, zipping through STOP signs and riding on the wrong side of the road. Most annoying is being forced off the sidewalk onto the grass by cyclists who come straight for me, and I use a walker. I would like to see licensing, certification, and insurance implementation for cyclists. It's a stretch I know, but I see violations from kiddies to professional cyclists breaking the law almost on a daily basis. With the recent increase in cyclists' injuries and deaths in Toronto and Markham, someone has to be brave enough to admit that what we have now is not enough.

Not to be a debby-downer but this is the leading cause of injury in kids 1-5 so as much education as possible please!
