Game, set, match! The Newmarket Community Tennis Club (NCTC) is set to start its outdoor summer season during the first week of May 2025 at the Keith Davis Tennis Centre. The bubble domes have been removed in anticipation for a smash-ing summer of tennis.

Summer hours of operation for programs and bookings:

• Monday-Friday: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sunday: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Two new lower courts (#9 & #10) are being added this season and will be available to the public mid-June on a first come, first play basis during the following hours:

• Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Thursday: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
• Saturday: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Update on the Tennis Clubhouse

Work on the KDTC Clubhouse is progressing well. The contractor is anticipating that the Clubhouse is tentatively set to open in June 2025. An official opening date will be announced closer to completion.

Site works and landscaping is ongoing in the area around the tennis facility. This work is not the construction of any additional facility, amenity, or parking, it is part of the planned site earth works. The work is happening at this time because the frozen ground helps support the movement of equipment.

The tennis clubhouse is actively under construction and in the coming weeks the roof and exterior walls will be completed. That will allow work to start on the inside of the building. The target is to open the clubhouse by May 2025.

New Keith Davis tennis facility is now open!

As of November 11, the new Keith Davis tennis facility off Bennington Road is fully operational, open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The club is open to the public to join, there are two registration periods annually - a winter and a summer season. For the winter 2024-2025 season, the memberships are sold out, and there is a waitlist. For the 2025 season, the Town is committed to have publicly accessible tennis time on a ‘first come basis’ similar to the other public tennis courts in town.

Lighting

The court lights will not operate when the domes are up, they will be used for the summer season only. From May to September, the lights will be on to facilitate tennis matches in the evening (based on daylight hours) and they will be turned off overnight. The lights will not be turned on in the morning.

Site landscaping and clubhouse construction

Landscape work has already commenced on site with grading activities. The Town is prioritizing planting the tree buffer between the courts and the neighbouring properties this fall (weather permitting). Additional landscaping is planned for the spring with a large variety of plants.

Foundation work on the clubhouse is underway with an anticipated opening date of spring/summer 2025 for the summer season.

Temporary Parking

Onsite parking will be temporarily reduced during construction of the clubhouse. The Town is providing temporary overflow tennis club parking along the south side of Bennington Road during this phase of construction. The Town will actively work to ensure the tennis facility does not impact available parking within the neighbourhood.

Construction on the new tennis facility continues to move along well and activity is beginning to ramp up as the project moves from site preparation to construction. You may have noticed a temporary entrance was created on the west end of New England Court to facilitate the construction of the tennis facility. The Town continues to work closely with Shining Hill Developments, who is undertaking the construction work and is aiming for a tentative opening date in mid-October.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse remains on track to be completed for the opening of the 2025 spring/summer season. Trailers will be used for operation during the first fall/winter season while the clubhouse is under construction, providing access to washrooms, and the reception desk.

Membership and Programming

Memberships will be available for purchase starting on Wednesday, August 28, with program registration to follow in early September. Sign up will be available through the Town of Newmarket website at https://www.Newmarket.ca/Tennis

The Newmarket Community Tennis Club (NCTC) will continue their summer operation as a non-profit in 2024, from May 1 to September 30. A full season including memberships, court bookings, and programs, will be available as they were in previous years. NCTC Dispersed Model Plan

May 1 – September 30, 2024

Lions Park (424 D’Arcy Street, Newmarket)

Will act as the NCTC base of operations, with a receptionist on site during normal NCTC staff hours. This location will host the recreational group lesson program. The nearby building will serve as the club office. There are 3 courts at this location, with parking available in the attached lot.

Art Ferguson Park (16195 Bayview Avenue, Newmarket)

Will be used by a pro for various clinics and junior high-performance programs. It will also host matches for the Intercounty Ladies and 55+ teams, and some house league matches. There are 2 courts at this facility, with parking available in the attached lot.

Drew Doak Park (80 Carlson Drive, Newmarket)

Will be primarily for recreational play but may be used to accommodate some programs when necessary.
There are 2 courts at this facility, with parking available on nearby streets. Parking outside of school hours is available at Mazo de la Roche public school nearby.

*Please note that there are no lights at this facility, so bookings are disabled from 8pm onward. Casual play after that time is at the player's own risk.

Marilyn Redvers Tennis Centre (1390 Wellington St. East, Aurora)

Through an agreement between Tennis Clubs of Canada and the Town of Newmarket, MRTC will be providing some of their indoor courts at specific times to accommodate certain NCTC programs and events.

The Town of Newmarket will be covering all associated court fees at MRTC.

Court Bookings

NCTC has transitioned to CourtReserve for website and database software. In addition to maintaining online registrations for membership and lessons, court bookings will now be available online. The following facilities will be available for members to reserve courts, beginning with May 1 and ending on September 30. Please note that while these courts are available for NCTC member bookings, they will at times be reserved for club programs.

Lions Park - 3 courts
Marilyn Redvers Tennis Centre will not be available for members to book, and will be exclusively used for certain club programs, as outlined above.

How will the Tennis Club Operate?

The Newmarket Tennis Club, a not-for-profit club, will continue to operate their summer club at the new facility, with Council endorsing a Town-operated model during the winter season. The Town-operated model will be introduced as a pilot program and staff will report to Council in the spring of 2025 for public input and consideration on the pilot project.

Public engagement has been a key part of the process and feedback has been gathered through emails, surveys, postcards and a public meeting with the tennis community.

Naming of the Tennis Club

Council also passed a motion to name the new facility the Keith Davis Tennis Centre in honour of a former community leader in the sport. Keith Davis is credited with starting the tennis club in Newmarket in 1946 and was an integral part of the tennis community.

Thank you to everyone who provided their written and live deputations at the March 2023 Committee of the Whole meeting. We also received a tremendous response to our online survey (now closed), and through deputations at various Council and Committee of the Whole Meetings.
