Construction of the Pickleball Facility at George Richardson Park
The Town of Newmarket will be constructing a new pickleball facility at George Richardson Park, located at 175 Bayview Parkway. Construction is anticipated to begin the week of September 21, 2026.
Project completion is anticipated in summer 2027.
Preliminary site investigation activities, including soil sampling, commenced earlier than anticipated as the contractor worked to advance the project schedule. As a result, temporary construction fencing was installed before the Town’s construction notice could be distributed to area residents. The Town has since addressed communication expectations with the contractor to ensure that appropriate advance notice is provided for future site activities. Temporary fencing associated with these activities may be adjusted as the work progresses.
Benefits of the Project:
The project will provide a new dedicated pickleball facility at George Richardson Park and expand opportunities for year-round recreational use. Once complete the facility will provide:
• 20 dedicated pickleball courts.
• An inflatable dome to support year-round play.
• A new clubhouse with washrooms, change facilities, office space and seating.
• Improved pathways and accessibility.
• New landscaping, trees and associated site improvements.
What to Expect During Construction
• Typical construction hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• Some weekend and/or extended work hours, depending on construction requirements.
• Temporary restrictions to portions of George Richardson Park and the surrounding parking area.
• Closure of the south leg of the adjacent parking lot to the north at 195 Bayview Parkway to accommodate construction staging, material storage and site access. The remaining parking area will continue to be available to the public.
• Temporary pedestrian and vehicle detours during certain stages of construction.
• Noise, dust and minor vibration associated with construction activities. The Contractor is
required to take reasonable measures to minimize impacts on neighbouring properties and
park users.
• Visitors are asked to follow all posted signage and remain outside fenced construction areas.
The Town and Contractor will make every effort to maintain access to the park and minimize
disruptions. Additional information regarding specific access or construction impacts will be
communicated as the project progresses.
We appreciate your patience during this important community improvement. Project updates will be shared as construction progresses.
Public meetings held for the future growth of pickleball
Newmarket hosted two drop-in Public Information Centre on January 31, 2024 and October 29, 2025. More than 50 people attended the October 2025 meeting and viewed the preliminary design concepts. See the public information boards presented at the meeting.
Information about how the new facility will be operated including the relationship with Newmarket Pickleball Club during summer operations were discussed. More information on the operation of the courts will be released closer to the completion date of the courts.

Background
Over the past few years, there has been a significant growth in the sport of pickleball. This growth, coupled with the goals set out in the Town’s Recreation Playbook has identified a need for a dedicated, year-round pickleball facility.
At several council meetings through 2023 and 2024, Newmarket residents have showed their support for the growth of pickleball locally with the construction of a dedicated pickleball facility.
