Share So, considering typical residential garages dimensions where two small cars barely fit - where do you expect residents keeping these containers? I suppose it will be the front of the house i.e. the driveway or the porch. We can’t place it aside the house without violating the bylaw and without upsetting the immediate neighbor (there are 8 feet space between the houses). I wonder how you imagine this will be handled? Effective December 31, 2025, under the Province’s Blue Box regulation, the recycling collection program in Newmarket will transition to producers under a model called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Recycling collection will no longer be managed by the Town and will instead be overseen by Circular Materials (CM), who has confirmed that 95-gallon recycling carts will replace the current blue boxes.
We are awaiting more details from CM on cart distribution and will share this information with the community once available. For more information on the transition of the Blue Box program, please visit https://www.newmarket.ca/bluebox.

Alnoor asked about 1 month agoThank you for sharing your feedback. Just to clarify, the upcoming changes to the recycling program are being introduced by Circular Materials (CM), not the Town. As of December 31, 2025, the recycling program will transition to producers under the Province’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model, and CM will oversee the program. The new 95-gallon recycling carts are designed to accommodate more material and are equipped with wheels to make them easier to move. We are also awaiting more information from CM, such as whether smaller cart sizes will be available.

Share I don't think I have a space problem, but I see where others do. But the footprint of the new bins is not much different than the small bins. The major difference is the height. I welcome any change to the current method, of any garbage/recycling practice. What most people don't realize, is that your green bin is NOT composted. It is burned, and that was admitted to by York Region, a few years ago. The new blue box program loads the cost to the vendor/manufacturer, which SHOULD result in lower taxes, and less revenue to towns and regions. I suspect to offset the loss, Speed cameras replace that revenue? Just a guess on my part. on Facebook Share I don't think I have a space problem, but I see where others do. Eric Smith asked about 1 month agoThank you for sharing your feedback. We appreciate your thoughts and openness to improvements in waste management practices.
We’d also like to clarify how green bin material collected at the curb in Newmarket is processed. All green bin material is delivered to York Region, where it is processed through contracted facilities in Ontario. Most of the material is composted using aerobic (with oxygen) technology, while a smaller portion is processed through anaerobic (without oxygen) digestion. The finished products include compost, fertilizer, and renewable biogas, which can be used to generate electricity and heat.
In 2024, York Region processed over 104,000 tonnes of green bin material into compost, biogas, and fertilizer. In January 2023, York Regional Council also awarded a 20-year contract for a new state-of-the-art biofuel facility that will process up to 140,000 tonnes of green bin material per year.

Susan Bourikas asked about 1 month agoThank you for sharing your feedback. We understand the interest in having recycling containers with lids, similar to the green bin, to help keep materials contained and prevent them from becoming litter. With the transition of the recycling program, Circular Materials will be introducing recycling carts to replace the traditional blue box. Share Waste Collection Feedback: As a Newmarket resident, I am very glad to know that the blue bin collection policy will be changed next year for every 2 weeks. However, I STRONGLY suggest that you collect Garbage (in black bags or in a garbage bin) EVERY WEEK, esp., in summer time. When I lived in Monteal, they started collecting recycles in a big bin automatically every 2 weeks, and Garbage every week 15 years ago. I really hope that you can kindly consider my suggestions.
