The Town of Newmarket would like to thank residents for their participation in the Public Consultation Centre (PCC) held at the Town Offices on April 21, 2026. The project team received valuable feedback during the meeting, as well as through subsequent correspondence regarding the proposed Beswick Drive Reconstruction Project.
This notice provides an update regarding the proposed sidewalk, as the Town received a range of comments concerning the inclusion of a new sidewalk on Beswick Drive. While some residents expressed concerns about the proposed sidewalk, others supported its installation to improve pedestrian connectivity, safety, and accessibility within the neighbourhood.
After reviewing public feedback, applicable standards, and project requirements, the Town has decided to proceed with the proposed sidewalk. This decision is based on the Town's obligation to provide an accessible transportation network that complies with the requirements of the
Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). In addition, the Town's Engineering Design Standards require a sidewalk on one side of all local roads. The Town also received feedback that there is a need to improve accessibility along this street. The addition of a sidewalk will provide a safer and more accessible route for residents of all ages and abilities. It will improve accessibility, enhance pedestrian safety, and better accommodate the mobility needs of residents and road users.
Accordingly, the sidewalk will remain part of the proposed design and will be incorporated into the final design.
The Town and its consultant have now completed the design stage of the project. As part of this process, all comments and concerns received from residents were carefully reviewed and considered.
The next step will be to tender the project for construction and select a contractor to perform the work. Subject to the tender results, some minor construction activities may begin in the fall of 2026; however, the majority of the work is anticipated to take place throughout 2027. The final surface asphalt lift is currently scheduled to be placed in mid-2028.
The Town will release a Notice of Construction to residents once construction timelines are firm. In addition, the Town will schedule a Public Information Centre (PIC) in the fall to provide residents with information regarding construction timelines, staging, and anticipated impacts.
