Update: The first phase of the the Cedar Street electrical work by NT Power is now complete. Stay tuned for more information on the second phase which includes installing heritage lights.



Newmarket-Tay Power (NT Power) will undertake electrical improvements along Cedar Street. The work will focus on converting all overhead wires on Cedar Street to underground and installing heritage lights along the street. 

  • When: January 2 to 31, 2024 
  • General Working Hours: Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This work is important and will help decrease power outages caused by inclement weather such as ice storms, freezing rain, and snow events while continuing to revitalize Newmarket’s award-winning Main Street. The installation of heritage lights will occur later in 2024 and is not part of this work phase.  

The Town of Newmarket and NT Power are working together to ensure minimal disruption to businesses, residents, and visitors to downtown Newmarket. Please see below for more information on the disruptions and a map of the work area. 

Disruptions

  • Partial Lane Closure of Cedar Street with working hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • January 2-5
    • January 15-19
    • January 22-26
  • Full Lane Closure of Cedar Street
    • January 8-11
      • No work on January 12 to accommodate the Mayor’s Levee Event
    • January 28-31 (overnight work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
      • Work on January 30 will take place from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • January 28-31: Scheduled short-term overnight power outages for businesses and residents along Cedar Street
  • Residents and businesses at 185-195 and 201-226 Main Street South are asked to avoid parking in the private parking areas (highlighted in the map attached) if possible during the week of January 15-19 and January 22-26 to accommodate electrical work in the area.
  • NT Power anticipates the need to occasionally enter the parking lot to facilitate the construction work at the buildings associated with this project, and access will strictly be limited to NT Power staff and approved contractors. While construction vehicles may temporarily occupy parking space to complete work, vehicle movement in/out of the parking areas will not be obstructed. Overnight parking will be made available in the Riverwalk Commons parking lot should for your convenience.

Residents and businesses, if you are expecting any special deliveries or need any accommodation during this time, please contact NT Power as soon as possible and we will work with you to ensure minimal disruption. Waste pick-up will be managed by NT Power. If you have questions, please call NT Power 905-895-2309 x 2 or visit ntpower.ca/cedarstreet.

    With the work on Cedar Street ending, NT Power will be removing electrical poles situated within Newmarket’s Community Centre parking lot P3, during the week of February 5 to 9. During this time, there will be a lane restriction in the area to accommodate this work (see map below for details). Please avoid this area if possible.

    As a reminder, the purpose of the Cedar Street Electrical work is to convert overheard electrical wires to the underground to decrease power outages caused by inclement weather. There are also future plans to install heritage lights on Cedar Street later in 2024 so that we can continue to revitalize our award-winning Main Street.

    The Town has been working with NT Power to ensure minimal impact on the community.

    This is a reminder for the upcoming scheduled overnight short term power outage for businesses and residents on Cedar Street from January 28-31, 2024 between the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on January 31. You may recall receiving an earlier notice from the Town of Newmarket and NT Power about this integral electrical work to relocate the overhead power lines to the underground. This work will help decrease power outages caused by inclement weather. There are also future plans to install heritage lights on Cedar Street later in 2024

    The Town has been working with NT Power to ensure minimal impact on the community. As a result, these short-term power outages will take place overnight to minimize disruption to residents and businesses. If you are a landlord of this property, please inform your tenant about the upcoming overnight short-term power outages.

    From January 28 to 31, there will also be a full closure of Cedar Street to accommodate this work. If you are expecting any special deliveries or need any accommodation during this time, please contact NT Power (905-895-2309 ext. 2) as soon as possible to ensure minimal disruption. Waste pick-up will also be managed by NT Power.
