Preliminary work on a parking structure that will add over 200 parking spaces to downtown Newmarket is set to begin in early May. Interim parking solutions will be in place to continue to support the community's parking needs.

The first step to adding a two-level modular parking structure is to demolish and remove the Keith Davis Tennis Centre located at the north end of Riverwalk Commons. Tennis programming will be moved to a state-of-the-art- facility as part of the Shining Hill development.

The construction work includes:

  • Decommissioning of active utilities, including Newmarket Hydro, Enbridge gas, Bell Canada communications, Town of Newmarket municipal water supply, and sanitary sewer.
  • Demolish and remove all the above and below grade structural elements of the Tennis Club building including the Tennis courts.
  • Backfill and reinstate the site to allow for over 100 additional temporary parking spaces.
  • Alteration of adjacent parking spaces in existing south parking lot

The work is expected to start the week of May 6, 2024, and is expected to be completed by the end of June. Members of the public can expect minimal parking disruptions during this time.

Interim Parking Measures

Recognizing the high demand for parking going into the bustling summer months and with the exciting and much-anticipated opening of the Postmark Hotel (York Region’s first boutique hotel) expected soon, the Town is implementing a multi-faceted approach for temporary parking in the downtown:

  • Adding 40 parking spaces on the east side of Church Street (just west of Main Street). These spots were previously designated as no parking areas.
  • Working with the BIA to encourage business owners and their employees to park outside of the downtown core.
  • Limiting facility rentals at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall during peak times to further alleviate parking pressures.
  • Offering a unique Trolley experience for Farmers' Market visitors on Saturday's from 8 to 1 p.m. where a trolley will shuttle visitors from the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle Street West) to the Farmers' Market
  • Opening a temporary gravel parking area with approximately 100 spaces once the Keith Davis Tennis Centre demolition is complete (mid to end of June).
