The Town of Newmarket is looking to expanding the trail along the North West Quadrant (NWQ) forest. The purpose of this project includes the installation of accessible asphalt pathways and bridges to connect subdivisions Woodland Hills Phases 6 and 7 to the existing Dave Kerwin Trail as shown in the map on this page.

Public engagement is a very important aspect to the success of this project. Two public information centres were hosted on November 20, 2020 and May 24, 2022 to ensure the new trail was meeting the needs to residents in the area. You can view a recap of the PIC's below.

Work is now underway!

Work in the trail extension is now underway and will take place in two phases:

Phase 1: Tree removal (March 13-31, 2023)

  • During this phase, residents may see trees falling as part of the removal process

Phase 2: Trail construction ( Begins in June/July 2023 until Summer of 2024)

  • It is anticipated that this trail will be completed by summer of 2024 with an opening in the fall of 2024

Virtual Public Information Centre on May 24, 2022

Following the Public Consultation Centre held in November 2020, the Town has finalized the NWQ Phase 5 trail design and invited the public to view the design and drawings. A Virtual Public Information Centre (VPIC) was hosted on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. See below for a video recording of the meeting:

The Town of Newmarket is seeking the public's input regarding an upcoming trail enhancement project in the North West Quadrant (NWQ) forest. The purpose of this project includes the installation of accessible asphalt pathways and bridges to connect subdivisions Woodland Hills Phases 6 and 7 to the existing Dave Kerwin Trail as shown in the map on this page.

The Town hosted a Virtual Public Consultation Centre (PCC) on Zoom on November 25, 2020 at 7 p.m. to present the proposed project and to gather feedback from residents.

The Town's consultant, Stantec, presented a brief overview of the project, preliminary design drawings and answered questions from the public.

    The Town of Newmarket is proceeding with the construction of the new accessible trail from Clifford Perry Place to Art West Avenue to the existing Dave Kerwin Trail.

    As you may have noticed, Phase 1 of the project, which focused on tree removal, is now complete. Phase 2 will focus on constructing the trail and associated retaining walls. Phase 2 is expected to begin as early as the week of August 21, 2023, with an anticipated completion by Fall 2024, subject to weather and site conditions. Restoration works may be completed in early 2025.

    Construction will occur Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and occasionally on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    The safety of all residents and workers is of the utmost importance. At the end of each day, the Contractor will leave the site safe and secure. Please do not enter the construction area and keep a safe distance away from all construction operations. We understand that children may be curious about the construction activities, however, we request parents make every effort to keep children a safe distance away from the construction site.

    We apologize for any inconvenience the construction may cause and thank you for your patience while we complete this exciting trail project that will provide a safe and more direct route to the Environmental Park for residents living on or near Clifford Perry Place and Art West Avenue.

    The Town of Newmarket is proceeding with the construction of the new asphalt trail through the forest from Clifford Perry Place to Art West Avenue to the existing Dave Kerwin Trail.

    The project consists of two phases which includes tree cutting/removal and construction of the trail. The first phase is scheduled to begin on March 13, 2023 with tree removal being completed by March 31, 2023. During this time, residents may see trees falling as part of the removal process. Phase 1 work including cutting, cleanup and removal/disposal off site is expected to be completed by end of May 2023.

    Phase 2 construction is expected to begin in June/July 2023 with an anticipated completion by summer 2024 and opening in fall 2024, subject to successful tender award, weather, and site conditions.

    The safety of all residents, staff, and workers is of the utmost importance. Please do not enter the construction area and keep a safe distance away from the tree falling operation. It is requested that you refrain from approaching/conversing with the contractor and/or staff as the tree removal process is a dangerous operation that requires all workers’ full attention. For any immediate questions or concerns please contact the undersigned.

    During the tree removal phase, chainsaws and other loud tree removal equipment will be used daily. Between March 13 and March 31, tree removal operation will take place from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. After March 31, any cutting/removal work should only occur Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and possibly on Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    We apologize for any inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience while we complete this exciting trail project that will provide a safe and more direct route to the Environmental Park for residents living on or near Clifford Perry Place and Art West Avenue.
