The Town of Newmarket is continuously working to improve pedestrian safety. We are happy to introduce a new Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) pilot program that will make it easier and safer to cross streets.

As part of a Pilot Program, the Town will be installing its first PXO (Type B) at Gorham Street and Muriel Street. The pilot project will help the Town evaluate the effectiveness of PXOs in Newmarket.

A Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) is a designated crossing location where vehicles must stop to allow pedestrians to cross. These crossings give pedestrians the legal right-of-way and make it safer and easier to cross streets.

Construction is set to begin in July with a completion in August, just in time for the school year. The Town’s contractor for this project is Beacon Utility Contractors Limited, with Ainley Group providing design and construction support. This work will take approximately two weeks to complete.

The work includes the installation of two poles, each with a mast arm and PXO equipment, new pavement markings and signage, and curb & sidewalk modifications.

What is a Type B Pedestrian Crossover?

Type B Pedestrian Crossovers include side-mounted and overhead-mounted signs, pavement markings, and flashing beacons with push buttons.

How to use the Type B PXO

Drivers Pedestrians Cyclists
  • Stop before the yield line (shark teeth) when a pedestrian is waiting or crossing at PXO
  • Remain stopped until the pedestrian has fully crossed
Note: Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians at PXOs can face fines up to $1,000 and 4 demerit points.

  • Stand next to "stop for pedestrians" sign
  • Press the push button
  • Wait until drivers fully stop
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Cross safely

  • Dismount and stand next to "stop for pedestrians" sign
  • Press the push button
  • Wait until drivers fully stop
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Cross the road by walking alongside the bicycle
Note: Cyclists on the road approaching the PXO must stop behind the yield line (shark teeth) when pedestrians are waiting to cross or already crossing - just like drivers.

The Town of Newmarket is pleased to inform residents that the Town of Newmarket will be installing a new Type B Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) on Gorham Street, at Muriel Street. This new PXO is part of the Town’s ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and support active transportation in the community.

The Town’s contractor for this project is Beacon Utility Contractors Limited, with Ainley Group providing design and construction support. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2025, during the school break, with overall completion expected by August 2025. Once started, the work at the site is expected to be completed within one to two weeks.

The work includes the installation of two poles, each with a mast arm and PXO equipment, new pavement markings and signage, and curb & sidewalk modifications.

As with all construction projects, nearby residents and road users may experience minor noise, dust, and minor vibration. The Town and its contractor will work to minimize these impacts.

The road will remain open to traffic for the majority of the construction period; however, single-lane closures may occur when necessary. Every effort will be made to minimize the duration and impact of these closures.

Please note that when school is in session, a School Crossing Guard will continue to supervise the crossing as usual to ensure the safety of students in the area.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to improve pedestrian safety in your neighbourhood.
